This brings up an interesting internet debate from the last few weeks. A law professor made an ill-advised blog post about how he and his doctor wife are not "really wealthy" despite their gross income of 400,000 USD. He mentioned the need for sending his three kids to private schools, the housekeeper, the gardener, etc. He got blasted. An economist named Brad (or Brian) DeLong made the point that when people think about wealth, they always look up and never down. The law professor and his wife were in the top 1 percent but he was probably looking at friends and associates who had millions of dollars in income.
